I went to work this morning, and Hadassah, my coworker, told me that when she handed the "reward" money to the woman, she said, "You should be giving me $100 instead of Af 100!" Hadassah is sure she is the one who stole my purse, thinking to get a very large reward for returning it!

I feel bad for you. I'm glad you are helping in a developing country, but I read your blog and wish you would open your eyes to the environment you are in. The majority of these people are trying to claw a living from sand, and you're naively shocked that they want money from you, and will even steal from you to get it.
You need to steel yourself. Do not carry so much hard cash! And do not allow someone to hit you! People who are in a constant state of struggle are not inherently good! They hunger! Do not let yourself be pushed around, and do not set yourself up to be taken advantage of, and you will find yourself at greater peace of mind while doing good in another country.
